Weigh Cool®

What is Weigh Cool®?

Weigh Cool is an initiative to help children and families reverse the trend of childhood obesity and type II diabetes through supportive relationships/environments, good nutrition and regular exercise. The statewide initiative works with state and community-based partners to provide children and families with simple ways to incorporate healthy nutrition and physical activity into their everyday routine.

Over the last year, The Nebraska Children and Families Foundation, the Lincoln YMCA and Action For Healthy Kids have:

1) Developed criteria (based on scientific research and promising practices) for schools to use to improve their environments. This criteria was also used to pilot curriculum in after-school programs this fall in Lincoln, NE
2) Recognized and supported schools, organizations and programs that are promoting physical activity, good nutrition and community support (according to criteria).
3) Integrated the Summer Play Every Day Summer Scorecard program into a Year-long “Kids in Motion” (partnering with N’Lighten Kids and All Recreate Fridays) program for schools and organizations to improve healthy lifestyles in children and families.

Serving as both a recipient and provider of public and private funding, NCFF’s roles and responsibilities in the Prevention of Childhood Obesity include:
a) incubate statewide initiatives and programs based on evidence-based practices,
b) identify and fill gaps in the system of care and the array of services available to meet the needs of children and families at the local and state levels,
c) foster collaboration and sharing of resources to reduce duplication of effort and maximize the impact of limited resources, and
d) recommend and lead policy changes at the state and local level to improve efficiencies in service delivery and to realize better outcomes for children and families.
